The textile webbings for safety and cargo seat belts(heavy-duty thread) are made of high-strength multifilament yarns. Due to its physical and chemical characteristics polyester (PES) is mainly used.

Why use polyester for sewing seat belts

Seat belts just like personal safety equipment are safety technical elements with an emphasis on their functional and ergonomic aspects. It is must be able to withstand extreme loads of up to 1.5 tonnes of tensile force in an emergency. In addition, to tear resistance and durability, jet dyeing is also important for achieving a high degree of light fastness.

The materials used for the production of seat belts have different resistances to chemicals. Polyamide for example is resistant to alkaline but sensitive to mineral acids. Polyester is resistant to mineral acids but destroyed by bases. Polypropylene is only slightly sensitive to acids or bases. For this reason, it is highly suited for usages where the resistance to chemicals with the exception of some organic solvents) is of great importance.

The fraying may start pretty minimal but if left untouched it could turn to extensive ripping or even a completely torn seat belt!

  • Step 1: Pin the ends of the webbing to the fabric or to each other. Before you sew, pin the ends of the webbing to the area of the fabric you want to sew them onto.
  • Step 2: Place the webbing and fabric under the presser foot.
  • Step 3: Begin sewing across the webbing.
  • Step 4: Sew to the edge of the webbing.
